I've been jammin' to Chrisette's album for a few weeks now and I'm loving it. It took me a minute to pass over the hump of her first two songs, which aren't my favorites to say the least (but "Like A Dream" has grown on me & "Work It Out" is still on my SKIP list).
After forwarding through the first two songs, the album really displays Chrisette's skill set, as well as her potential to truly leave a mark in the music industry. Her words intertwined with head bobbing (or swaying :>)beats creates a musical chemistry that is all her own. My faves have to be "Love is You" and "Your Joy" for their pure soulfulness. However, I love to rock it out to "In This For You" and "Let's Rock" (of course). I'll also push rewind and listen to "Good Girl" a good 2-3 times for good measure. This jam was also played on one of my fave new shows "Private Practice" (the spin-off of "Grey's Anatomy"). Her second single to be released on the radio "Best of Me" is also a classy tune you should spend a little time with. There definitely isn't a lack of songs on "I AM" to maintain your attention.
Great Choice for the month of October!! If you don't have this album already, it's worth the change you'll spend on it. We need to support vocalists that truly treat music like the form of art it is. Her voice has a Harlem jazz flare, yet is unmistakably modern. ALSO, check her out on Nas's latest album "Hip Hop is Dead." She lends her vocals to two songs on his album & she makes the songs come alive (real talk!).
HAPPY LISTENING!!!
I first heard Chrisette Michelle last year on Nas’ last album (Hip-Hop Is Dead). I remember her specifically on two songs (Still Dreamin’ & Cant Forget About You) – she caught my attention then. And it made me want to check out her album (sorry jon, this was way before the email you sent me).
I love this woman’s talent!!!! I think she’s wonderful! Interesting, her album (I Am) parallels Jill Scott’s first album (Introducing Jill Scott). What I believe I see (hear) is the range is singing talent, musical production, and song themes. It was new, refreshing, creative, and addicting. I don’t believe Chrisette’s album has the same continual playability as Introducing Jill Scott though.
More specifically, what I really like about Chrisette’s talent is the fact that she’s studied other artists (Sarah Vaughn, Nina Simone, Billie Holliday, Natalie Cole). In her music, she expresses her emotions, thoughts, and concerns in a similar singing style of those talented women. It’s something that, I believe, is missing from the MAJORITY of artists receiving play time in most African-American genres. Not so much that one can copy a sound or style, but that they study those artists and still express themselves in a talented fashion.
BAD:
I though the album started slow. I wasn’t feeling the first track (Like a Dream). I know of one person that said her voice was annoying. I assume she heard this song only. Because, to me, it is annoying. The second track took a little bit of time to grow on me (Work It Out). I didn’t connect much with the last track either (I Am One). To me, it’s a 21st Century version of “We Are The World”…though that type of song is quite necessary…just didn’t come off “interesting” to me. I didn’t feel it.
GOOD: (Chrisette is the BOMB)
I appreciated the variety in the music and production along with her ranging vocal styles. Track four (Best Of Me) is a great song for all those sentimental reasons from past relationships. Im sure many people will connect with it. To me it is reminiscent of production of Eric Clapton - kind of soft rock feel to it. The next song (Your Joy) was a wonderful song. To me, this is an example of how Chrisette didn’t just take someone else’s singing style or song concept for copying. I think the production is this song is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. I really like the soft start…and the crescendo towards the end. Considering the content…I wanted to break out in tears. Perhaps sometime in the distant future – or perhaps not. LOL
Continuing, some songs have that pop(ular) hip-hop mainstream appeal. Typically, I don’t get into pop music (unless it is that Soulja Boy…damn, is he taking over the planet or what!?!?!? LOL). I like the song Good Girl. Much needed content that I think young men and women ought to hear and be exposed to more. It’s a cool song to ride out to.
Speaking of riding out – Lets Rock is the most hype song on this album. She sings and talks even about her musical influence/range in this song. This song is my favorite to bump in my car. She gets “sneaky freaky” on the production tip with the old Wu-Tang beat (Triumph from Wu-Tang Returns). This song is HOT!!!!! (Im playing it right now!)
I think Be Ok, Golden, and Mr. Radio are cool songs too. Be Ok is a good song for after that breakup…kinda typical Mary J. Blige content. But its pretty dope. Mr. Radio is coo…to me here she’s the most reminiscent of any Jill Scott song. Golden is a good song…she shows her range here and is another song a good production in my opinion.
Wait, I made a mistake…In This For You is the most hype song. This is the song to ride out to. I can see it now…me rolling shotgun and my sweetie mashin’ on the highway in her Gucci Sun Glasses! LOL. Yeah…this song is for cruising purposes mostly.
The song I like the most – Love Is You! First off…I really dig her sentimental songs. Production wise – the simplicity of the piano, strings, and her voice is great. I like the content about love, it makes you think and feel. But something I noticed in this song almost immediately was who I thought sung this song before (it’s an originally song however). The artist that came to mind was Jon Legend. I think this song would be just as fabulous if he sung it or if they did a duet. I think her range, production, content and overall feel of the song matches the best songs Jon Legend has sung. (By the way, I’m a Jon Legend fan…especially his second album).
So to recap…I’m really feeling Chrisette Michelle as an artist! Her album is good…not necessarily monumental in my opinion – however still a must have. But I look forward to her songs and collaborations in the future.
Next time I'm work on brevity!
